When Hannibal began, one question many asked was how could this series sustain itself. It all caused him to become, as he put it, “self-aware” and begin to really look back on the role Hannibal could have played in all of this. As screwed up as Will is, he wasn’t so far gone that he couldn’t recall that those murders began before things went south for him and that he couldn’t possibly have committed them. Hannibal had orchestrated everything to make Will look guilty to everyone involved, even Will himself… That being the case, it was very satisfying when Will did indeed figure out more was going on, all because Hannibal just took things too far when he framed Will not just for Abigail’s murder but all of the “copycat” murders he’d committed since the series began. The finale did an excellent job showing just how far Will had fallen beaten down and damaged enough to believe that he had indeed killed Abigail.

But what has been so brilliant about this series is that it had Hannibal do things that have ultimately been so destructive to people we also like, including Abigail and, of course, Will, that we can’t just excuse his behavior in the way TV viewers often can, to a rather extreme degree.Ĭan you imagine if this had been the final episode of the series? While I’m so, so glad Hannibal will be back, the amazing thing is, this ending could have worked as a series finale, if it had to – one that completely subverted expectations by having Hannibal win! Regardless, even if it's not the end of the story, it still managed to subvert the entire Lecter/Graham dynamic (or Lecter/Clarice, if you’re looking at another FBI agent…) by leading up to that final scene… So simple, yet so very effective, to have Hannibal be the one who’s free and Will the one locked up. When you have a character as smart, clever and witty as Hannibal, it’s easy to begin to root for him, even knowing the terrible things he does. But in Hannibal’s perfect world, Abigail would indeed have become the daughter he never had – as he explained to Bedelia, he liked how it felt to, “Guide and support and in many ways, direct a life.” He just left out the part about having to end it. It’s hard not to assume his tears with Bedelia talking about Abigail were real – even though he is the one responsible for her being dead. This season has reminded us more and more what a monster Hannibal is, while also making him a very fascinating, layered monster. However, at the end, as Hannibal and Bedelia sat down and ate their veal… it became clear that the veal in question was probably poor Abigail. On a side note, it’s funny to think that Hannibal, comparatively, doesn’t go as far as Hobbs – he “only” eats his victims, and doesn’t use their hair in pillows and other such depravity… not that Hannibal isn’t sick and twisted himself of course, but on this show, there are so many levels of sick and twisted. When it was noted that they didn’t find a body, Will, believing he had killed her, said it must have been, “Because I honored every part of her,” just like Garrett Jacob Hobbs… And while it could leave open the sliver of hope that she's being kept a prisoner somewhere, it more likely opened up the possibility that Hannibal had, of course, eaten her.
